Watch the process: Expressive abstract landscape painting
Plus the childhood memory that inspired this art journal page.
When I close my eyes, I can still remember standing at the prow of the ship. The thick anchor chain coiled on the deck. I remember gazing into the ocean, at the frothy white sea foam around the ship’s prow, looking for sea horses as the ship cut through the seas.
I can almost taste the salty spray of seawater, my skin crusted with a layer of salt crystals, as I ran delightedly ahead of my parents on the foredeck during our after-dinner walks.
I remember my father’s strong arms holding me tight as I leaned over the side of the ship’s deck, trying to get my face as close as I could to the sea, shrieking in delight at the light spray of ocean waves on my cheeks. And the delight of sighting seagulls…of racing to the bridge for our first sight of land after days days or weeks or sometimes months at sea.
When I stepped up to the painty table, I could almost taste the salt of the ocean on my tongue, feel the refreshing ocean breeze blowing through my hair, hear the squawk of the seagulls flying alongside the ship.
I closed my eyes for a moment and let all those feelings, emotions, and sensations flow through me. And then I channeled them onto the page...

This is beautiful Shinjini.
I am an artist and like to explore Indian folk art but this is a whole new world for me. The messiness, layers, details, beautiful. 🫶🏻🫶🏻
